How to update xbox360 without xbox live?

I bought a 3 year old falcon chip xbox360 off of ebay. When i turned it on i wiped out the hard drive to get rid of the old memory but when i tried to make my own avatar and change my xbox360 dashboard wallpaper, it said i needed a system update. How can i do this with xbox live? (and don't just send me to xbox.com)
